CVCAP’s Seeing Differently: Critical Approaches to Early Childhood Art Education

This session rethinks early childhood art education by challenging assumptions about young children’s capabilities. Through lecture and interactive workshop, participants will examine power dynamics, explore alternative approaches to documentation and pedagogy, and develop practical strategies for creating more equitable, child-centered art experiences.

Seeing Differently — Critical Approaches to Early Childhood Art Education with Dr. Hayon Park

Hayon Park, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Art Education at George Mason University and author of Rancière and Emancipatory Art Pedagogies: The Politics of Childhood Art (2023). She co-edited Visual Arts with Young Children: Practices, Pedagogies, and Learning (2021) and serves as Associate Director of the Center for the Study of Childhood Art, where she co-hosts the Childhood Art Speaker Series and Childhood Art: A CSCA Podcast. At the National Art Education Association (NAEA), she served as Southeastern Region Higher Education Division Director (2023-2025) and will serve as President of the Early Childhood Art Education Interest Group (2026-2028). Her research appears in Studies in Art Education, Qualitative Inquiry, Art Education, Visual Arts Research, and other journals at the intersection of visual arts education and early childhood studies. She serves as Editor for Childhood Art: An International Journal of Research and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Education & the Arts.
